Fusarium Wilt

Causal Agent:
Pepper: Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. capsici Eggplant: Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melongenae.

Distribution:
Worldwide

Symptoms:
Symptoms first appear as a slight yellowing of foliage and wilting of upper leaves. As wilting progresses, leaves may turn dull-green to brown and remain attached to the plant. When the stem and roots are cut diagonally, reddish-brown streaks are visible in the vascular tissues.

Conditions for Disease Development:
The fungus survives in soil for several years and is spread on farm equipment, in infected plant debris and by irrigation water. Warm soil temperatures (33ºC; 92ºF) and high soil moisture favor rapid disease development.

Control:
Plant on raised beds to promote soil water drainage away from roots. Thoroughly disinfect equipment before moving from infested to clean fields.

Leaves remain attached to wilted pepper plant.
